Exciting Opportunity for Head Gardener at a Prestigious Private Estate, Cotswolds

A unique opportunity has arisen to join a prestigious private estate as Head Gardener. We are seeking a dedicated, hands-on professional to lead and transform the estate’s stunning gardens into a year-round masterpiece.
The estate features 11 acres of beautifully maintained grounds, including: a well-established kitchen garden, a glasshouse with vegetables and plants, beautiful herbaceous borders, chickens, bees (managed by a beekeeper), and potential plans for future livestock.
This role is ideal for someone with a passion for horticulture, who can take ownership of the garden, lead a team, and help develop the estate’s full potential through creative ideas and skilful execution.
Key Responsibilities:
Manage and lead the transition from external contractors to an in-house gardening team
Oversee all garden maintenance, including lawns, trees, hedgerows, borders, and courtyards
Develop and maintain formal vegetable gardens with seasonal crops
Maintain high standards across all areas, ensuring the garden is well presented year-round
Hands-on involvement, including weeding, mowing, and machinery operation
Offer innovative ideas for winter interest and seasonal improvements
Work closely with the estate’s owner to ensure their vision is implemented
Create efficient garden maintenance plans, including team size and necessary resources
Requirements:
Experienced and Enthusiastic: Whether you're a seasoned head gardener or looking to advance your career, the role calls for someone passionate with fresh ideas.
Hands-On: This role requires someone who leads by example, willing to get involved in the day-to-day work of maintaining the garden.
Meticulous and Visionary: Attention to detail and creativity are essential. We’re looking for someone who can balance meticulous care with innovative garden design.
Strong Communicator: You will need excellent communication skills to collaborate with the owner and the wider estate team.
Local or Willing to Relocate: Ideally, you’re based nearby or able to arrange your own local accommodation if planning to relocate.
Excellent, highly competitive salary on offer - £50k upwards depending on experience
Days/Hours: Monday to Friday, 9hrs a day
