The Speech and Language Therapy Assistant supports speech and language therapists in delivering therapeutic services to individuals with speech, language, communication, and swallowing disorders. This role involves assisting with therapy sessions, preparing materials, and maintaining accurate records.
Key Responsibilities:
1. *Therapy Session Assistance:*
- Assist speech and language therapists during therapy sessions, providing support with activities and exercises.
- Conduct routine therapy exercises with clients under the supervision and guidance of a qualified therapist.
- Monitor clients’ progress during sessions and provide feedback to the therapist.
2. *Preparation of Materials:*
- Prepare therapy materials, equipment, and resources for sessions.
- Create and organize visual aids, worksheets, and other tools used in therapy.
- Ensure therapy rooms are set up and ready for use.
3. *Client Support:*
- Assist clients with practicing speech and language exercises as prescribed by the therapist.
- Provide encouragement and positive reinforcement to clients during therapy activities.
- Support clients and their families by explaining therapy exercises and providing guidance for practice at home.
4. *Administrative Duties:*
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of client progress and therapy sessions.
- Input data into electronic health records and therapy management systems.
- Schedule appointments and manage the therapist’s calendar.
- Handle telephone and in-person inquiries, providing information and assistance as needed.
5. *Resource Management:*
- Manage and organize therapy resources and materials, ensuring they are readily available and in good condition.
- Order and replenish supplies as needed.
6. *Quality Control and Safety:*
- Follow all health and safety guidelines and protocols within the therapy setting.
- Ensure therapy environments are clean, safe, and conducive to effective therapy sessions.
- Report any equipment malfunctions or safety concerns to senior staff.
7. *Training and Development:*
- Participate in training sessions and continuing education opportunities.
- Stay informed about developments in speech and language therapy practices and tools.
- Assist in the training and orientation of new staff and volunteers.
8. *Team Collaboration:*
- Work collaboratively with speech and language therapists, other therapy assistants, and healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality therapeutic services.
- Participate in team meetings and discussions regarding client care and therapy plans.
- Provide support and assistance to colleagues as needed.
Qualifications:
- *Education:*
- Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent.
- Further education or training in speech and language therapy, communication disorders, or a related field is advantageous.
- *Experience:*
- Previous experience in a healthcare or educational setting is desirable.
- Experience working with individuals with speech and language disorders is beneficial.
Skills and Abilities:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Empathy and the ability to work with diverse populations, including children and adults.
- Organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Basic computer proficiency and familiarity with electronic record-keeping.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and work under supervision.
Working Conditions:
- Varied shifts, which may include some evenings and weekends.
£17 per hour
